Inconel 690 alloy is with excellent intergranular corrosion resistance and intergranular stress corrosion cracking resistance, comparing with Inconel 600 alloy, Inconel 690 alloy has higher chromium content, which makes Inconel 690 more suitable to the environments under oxidising acids, salts and sulphidation at elevated temperatures.

One of the typical applications for Inconel 690 alloy is heat transferred pipe material for steam generator in pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant. The materials for heat transferred pipe of steam generator in pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant has gone through a developed period, including 304 austenitic stainless steel, Inconel 600 alloy, Inconel 800 alloy and 690 alloy. After the study of corrosion failure of Inconel 600 alloy in service, it shows that intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking are the main problems. Meanwhile to be as the material of heat transferred pipe of steam generator in pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant, Inconel 690 alloy has not been found any damaged cases since it was put into use for this field in 1990s.
